Submitted by the Rev. Susan Otey
Pastor, Christ United Methodist Church, Great Falls, Montana

The Rev. Susan Otey, of Christ United Methodist Church in Great Falls, Montana, recently received the Friends of Education Award. This award is given yearly by the Montana Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals and recognizes individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond in supporting and promoting public education.

Jon Konen, a principal in Great Falls who presented the award to Rev. Otey, said, “I know there is a church and state separation but our partnership with Christ United Methodist Church facilitated by Pastor Susan Otey has been amazing." When Otey arrived at Christ UMC three and a half years ago, one of her first meetings was with Konen to see what support he might need for students, families and staff there. Since that time the church has:

  • Sponsored a clothing swap for families twice a year
  • Provided activities and supervision for children during conferences
  • Helped with special events like the ice cream social, Grahams for Grands, and pre-K literacy night
  • Helped in the classroom to support student learning
  • Sponsored mid-year school supply drives
  • Written thank-you notes to the faculty and staff
  • Packed food boxes weekly for families experiencing food insecurity
This award is a wonderful acknowledgment of the work the congregation of Christ UMC has done to support families and children in its neighborhood.
