Story submitted by the Rev. Brad Laurvick
Pastor at Highlands UMC, Denver & food drive organizer

The United in Orange Food Drive was an amazing success across our region. The food drive total was 360,664 donations, with more than 140 sites reporting. This is triple what we raised in 2014 with 80 sites. It will be donated to food pantries in the communities where it was raised.

A huge thank you to all the drop-off sites, the communities that supported them, and the leadership that coordinated their efforts. This effort would never have happened without the support of Bret & Jenna Wilcox, who have managed the website and ever growing database of participating sites. We also were blessed by new partners like the Presbyterians (thanks Katie Robb Davis), businesses, and hospitals.

A special shout-out to the farmers of Colorado with 60,040 pounds of potatoes, 21,000 pounds of wheat, and 6,000 pounds of beef donated!

We also are grateful to the local media in cities throughout Broncos Country that featured stories about United in Orange. News networks, radio programs, local papers – these outlets helped invite the generosity that will feed so many.

Please remember that this work is not over! Most food pantries will go through this food in a matter of weeks, if not sooner. We must remain United in our efforts to eliminate hunger.

And know that whenever one of our teams makes the finals, we will be ready to use team spirit to make a difference in the lives of those who are hungry.

The Western North Carolina Conference reported its total collection was 584,410. Read the full story here.
