Congratulations to Chase Bertelsen, of Wibaux, Montana, for receiving a $1,700 scholarship from the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry's Office of Loans and Scholarships! Bertelsen is a student at Rocky Mountain College studying exercise science to become a fitness trainer. He's in his third semester of a five-year program. Bertelsen also is a member of the college's Battlin' Bears football team.

Bertelsen is a lifelong member of Wibaux United Methodist Church, where his grandparents have been longtime members. His grandfather Dave is the current chair of the Wibaux UMC's Administrative Board. When asked about how his faith has influenced his academic and everyday life, Bertelsen said, "It [faith] has taught me a lot and I feel it has helped me grow up and be a more mature college student."

Bertelsen appreciates being a scholarship recipient, stating that "anything helps as far as support for college." He hopes to use his degree in exercise science to be part of an athletic department at a school.

The Office of Loans and Scholarships will be awarding more than 2,000 students a total of $4.5 million in financial assistance for 2015. Thanks to your support of United Methodist Student Day, World Communion Sunday, and Native American Ministries Sunday, which help fund a portion of the loans and scholarships. The remaining funds for these awards come from girfts, annuities, and endowments GBHEM has invested and administered for decades.

Students who are members of The United Methodist Church may apply for a fall 2016 GBHEM scholarship online between Jan. 4, 2016 to March 1, 2016 at www.gbhem.org/scholarshipapplication. Student loans are also available at interest rates as low as 3.75 percent (lower than federal educational loan rates) with a credit worthy cosigner.
