Members of Riverton UMC’s mission committee served desserts on Fat Tuesday to kick off Imagine No Malaria fundraising efforts. When members of Riverton United Methodist Church began fundraising efforts for Imagine No Malaria at the beginning of March, they thought it would take 10 months to reach their ambitious goal of $4,000 ($20 per 200 members).

Mission committee member Alice Nicol said they figured Lent would be a good time to kick off the campaign and bring awareness which would hopefully continue throughout the year.

They started with a decadent dessert fundraiser on Fat Tuesday and had Rev. Mark Calhoun, Lander UMC pastor, share his story about Angola.

Children made African hut-shaped coin banks for loose change offerings, while the adults did a showing of “Mary and Martha” one Sunday afternoon, spent another Sunday listening to a college student talk about a recent trip to Kenya, another Sunday Ken Koome, a missionary serving the churches in East Angola, made a presentation to their church, one of the adult Sunday school classes read “The Last Hunger Season” by Roger Thurow.

Each week during Lent, Pastor Mark Rader showed a different clip or story from the Imagine No Malaria campaign and finally, to top it all off, the missions team hosted an Easter Sunday breakfast where 120 people came and ate and supported Imagine No Malaria.

The fruit of all this labor, according to Nicol is not only did Riverton UMC reach its $4,000 goal during Lent, but exceeded it by $1,000.

“Our committee was just overwhelmed by the generosity and support of our congregation. They really got behind the campaign,” Nicol said. “When I announced (in church) that we had exceeded our goal, one lady came up to me and said, ‘We’re going to keep going, aren’t we?’ So I think we will continue our campaign until December.”

Thanks be to God, for the faithfulness, enthusiasm and commitment of Riverton United Methodist Church.
