Rev. Herbert Cies served churches in Vinland-Fairview, Hugo, Windsor and Westminster, Colorado; Torrington and Riverton, Wyoming, and Kalispell and Lewiston, Montana. He was a District Superintendent for six years in the Billings District of the Yellowstone Conference

Herbert served his country for five years in the Sixth Armored Division Army Tank Corps, Combat Command as a Captain in Communications in France, Germany and Luxembourg. During his tour, he felt a calling to become a pastor – to help promote peace in homes, our nation and in the world.

After completing a B.A. degree at the University of Kansas, Herb met and married Eva Lucile Hower Tanner, who was a widow with two boys (Dan (D), James) and two girls (Martha (D), Donna. Herbert also had a son Edwin (D). Then Herb entered the seminary at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado and became a United Methodist pastor.

Herb and Eva lived their remaining years, since 1993, at Asbury Park in Newton. He was devoted to his wife of 63 years. Herb continued to volunteer whenever he was needed. He had a knack for instantly turning strangers into friends because he looked for the good characteristics in each person. He enjoyed improvising whenever needed and strived to live each day to its full potential.
