Mission Priorities of Yellowstone Conference

Yellowstone Conference has four mission priorities: Blackfeet Parish, East Angola Pastor's Support Project, Intermountain Children's Home, and General Board of Global Ministries missionaries.  Below is a brief description of  these ministries.

Blackfeet Parish

The Blackfeet United Methodist Parish (BUMP) serves the people who live on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. The majority of the present day residents living on the Blackfeet Reservation are bloodline descendants of the original indigenous inhabitants of this area.
Since 1882 the United Methodist Church has had a continuous presence on the Blackfeet Reservation.  The participants in the ministry and programs of the Blackfeet United Methodist Parish reflect the cultural and racial diversity of the larger community.

Our Vision

  • · To strengthen the current ministries of the Blackfeet United Methodist Parish by increasing the mutual support and cooperation between the Browning UMC, Babb UMC and the Heart Butte Fellowship.
  • · To strengthen and extend our relationship with the connectional system of the United Methodist Church; especially with the Yellowstone Annual Conference, the General Board of Global Ministry and the United Methodist Women.
  • · To focus on children's programs and mission outreach as the highest priority for the Blackfeet United Methodist Parish.

                 East Angola Pastors Support Project

Yellowstone Conference has partnered with the East Angola Methodist Church since 2004. Before the war there
were over 200 Methodist Churches – in 2000 there were only 30. Some districts had only 1 or 2 churches.

Angolans have been rebuilding their churches, sometimes one row of bricks at a time. Most pastors in East Angola
are not paid a salary by their congregation but are paid ‘in kind’ – eggs, cassava, sweet potatoes, a chicken or rabbit.
The East Angola Conference covers the poorest areas of Angola. Most of the churches are small and in rural villages.

We in Yellowstone Conference want to support our brothers and sisters in Christ as they rebuild their churches
and ministries. We do that by supporting 54 pastors in 3 districts and 1 area of evangelization (in a remote part of
the country). Each pastor receives $40 a month in salary, and we pay Alcides Martins a stipend as well to administer
the project.

Global Ministries supports us in this effort. All money to the pastors is sent through Global Ministries and is subject
to audits by GBGM, on-site visits, and yearly reports.

Contributions should be sent to Yellowstone Conference Office. Checks should be made out to Yellowstone Conference and memo line: Angola Pastors.

                                  Intermountain

Intermountain is a nationally recognized Montana non-profit specializing in nurturing, therapeutic environments for
children under severe emotional distress. They integrate relationship-based treatment and sound clinical discipline
to assure a permanent family for every child.

At Intermountain, through clinically sound treatment and safe nurturing relationships, they achieve effective and
enduring outcomes for children and families. Because their staff’s deep, healing relationships with children are
essential to the continued effectiveness of our model, they diligently recruit and retain the best and brightest professionals. Longevity of both leadership and direct care staff is hallmark of Intermountain.

Children who come to Intermountain have a long history of extreme emotional and behavioral responses. The
families of these children have not been able to regulate their emotional responses by any conventional means and
the families feel increasingly trapped and overwhelmed by the child.

At Intermountain, they treat children and families, not diagnoses and although they use attachment principles
in their treatment, they provide a more holistic treatment than just attachment.

Yellowstone Conference has a long relationship with Intermountain, going back to the days of Brother Van.
